The state of education in Afghanistan in 2020, the final full year of the previous government.

3.7 million children didn’t attend school, secondary education enrollment was a fraction of primary education enrollment, girls disproportionately didn’t attend school.

Children enrolled in schools are not learning much, partly because their teachers do not have the relevant skills or knowledge.

Data from 2013 shows that 93% of 10-year-old Afghan children cannot read and understand a simple text when they finish primary school.

67% of boys compared to 48% of girls are enrolled in school, meaning 33% of boys and 52% of girls are not enrolled in school, amounting to 3.7 million children.

Of the 3.7 million children who do not attend school, 60% are girls.

46% of schools are without proper buildings.
