One of the elements working against Gavin Newsom is that he underperformed the House Democrat vote in 2018, which hasn’t really happened since 2002 after which Gray Davis was recalled. The difference is the 2002 race was competitive because California wasn’t a one-party socialist paradise back then. Newsom is not that popular among Democrats but won by virtue of being a Democrat, which is sufficient to win in California.
