Eli Cohen was an Israeli spy who operated in Syria during the 1960s. After his capture by Syrian intelligence in January 1965, they confiscated his documents, photos, and personal belongings. For over six decades, the Assad regime kept these items secret and caused trauma to Israel. However, with the fall of Assad’s leadership and the rise of Al-Jolani’s Syria, Israel’s Mossad was handed all of Cohen’s documents and belongings.
Al-Jolani’s Syrian government handed over around 2,500 documents, photos, and personal items belonging to Eli Cohen to Israel’s Mossad. These were safeguarded by the Assad regime for 60 years. The collection includes a memo from his execution day and his last letter to his family.
Israel was unable to reclaim these valuable items during six decades of Assad’s rule. However, they were effortlessly retrieved under Al-Jolani’s leadership. This situation is seen as a historic humiliation for Syria. They not only lost the files but also their pride and whatever sovereignty they had left. It has been considered an absolute disgrace and betrayal by many.
