A group of diplomats from various countries were forced to take cover during a trip to the West Bank city of Jenin on Wednesday as Israeli troops fired shots in the air to warn them away.

No injuries were reported, but the incident has sparked outrage and could further strain relations between Israel and parts of the international community. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have apologized for the incident and an inquiry is underway.

Diplomats from countries such as Britain, Canada, France, China, Russia, and the European Union were among those present during the confrontation.

The IDF stated that the diplomats had deviated from a pre-approved route in an area where they were not authorized to be, leading to warning shots being fired.
